This is not going to go down well in India....

China upsets India in field hockey

DOHA, Qatar (AP) - China stunned eight-time Olympic champion India 3-2 on Tuesday in the biggest upset ever in Asian Games men's field hockey, damaging India's semifinal prospects.

Capitalizing on India's defensive errors, strikers Hu Liang and Liu Xiantang made flash strikes in open play to give a two-goal lead to China, which then fell back in defence as India wasted chances.

The loss leaves India needing to beat defending champion South Korea to have any chance of maintaining its record of reaching the semifinals at every Asian Games. The South Koreans opened with a 9-1 win over Bangladesh.

"What can I say, this is a dream come true for us," said China's captain Song Yi.

This is just the beginning.
Emergence of the latest challenger in World Hockey. A sign of growth for the game. Too bad it had to be India.

Watch out for them in Beijing 2008.  8)

Looks like a "changing of the guards" in Asian FH. Losses by India and Pakistan, to European teams, in the past, have usually brought about a gnashing of teeth about divergent styles. It would be interesting to see what the commentators in these countries will now have to say about their "new" opponents from China, Japan, Malaysia, Korea...

There's no point fretting about past glories and achievements when people are doing almost nothing to improve themselves.

China employed the great Korean Coach - Kim Sang Ryul to improve their standards.
Kim turned Korea with very limited pool of players into Olympic medalist. With the resources he has in China, imagine what will happen next. Ironically he learnt his coaching trade in India!!

The Chinese even sought FIH to help organise their National Games to help improve their officiating - In the end improved their domestic game standard.

When there's a will, there's a way....

There is no more hockey in Pakistan! Its limited to a handful of players now! There are no more games on hockey field! They have reduced to half what they used to be in the past.

Hockey is no longer attractive for younger players in Pakistan! They go for cricket! No school hockey! No club hockey! No street hockey! Nothing! Soon Pakistan will disappear from international hockey.

But that still leaves the question: "WHY?"

Well with the introduction of the artificial turf hockey is more about fitness than skills! And Pakistanis are not as fit as the Netherlands, Germany, Australia and Spain players are (and now Koreans, Japanese and Chinese). So they kept on loosing on international games, this resulted in loss of popularity of the sports in this country!

Moreover, players lost their jobs which were given to them for playing with different teams! So for young players, there is no more attraction in the game!

Pakistan hockey is dead now!

I'm glad China has won against India just like they did against Pakistan. Gives me a good feeling. Almost a feeling of satisfaction. Strange... I think I should start supporting China. Hmmm...  Wink
