Thanks Steve, Andy.
Based on the comments in the main section, here is how I propose to structure the GK manual.  I am happy to change, add, delete or move anything (especially add - this is just a beginning).  As you can see, I have structured it into 4 main parts - how to be a GK, how to coach a GK (including self-coaching tips), some advice for aspiring elite keepers and other keeping resources.  I agree with Magpie's suggestion that each section should have beginner, intermediate, advanced subsections, however I think this aspect will develop as we add things.

So basically at the moment I'd love comments on topics to include, as well as any advice regarding other resources that you know of to help with development of the manual.

draft outline

Part 1: How to be a hockey goalkeeper
Basic Framework
Role(s) of the goalkeeper
Rules affecting the goalkeeper
Goalkeeping Equipment guide – what to wear, how to wear it, how to maintain it

Skills
Format: Explain reason, explain skill, give example, give pathway to acquiring the skill

Basic Skills
Definition – skills that all goalkeepers must have, regardless of level
   List:    Positioning
                                Stance
Saving with the legs and feet
Saving with the hands and stick

Advanced Skills

Definition – skills that goalkeepers playing at a senior level must have
List:   Tackling (upright, sliding, diving, stick tackling)
      Diving (aerial/ground saves)

Special Skills
Definition – skills that are used in set plays or require special techniques
               List          Short Corner Defence
                              Penalty Stroke Defence
                              Skyballs
                              ???others

Setting the defence
List:    Communication skills
   Reading the play
   Setting defensive lines

Part 2: How to coach a hockey goalkeeper
Drills
Fitness
Nutrition
Psychology and tactical development

Part 3: Elite Goalkeeping
Would like to have a section here from players who are at the elite level – how did you get there, what does playing at that level involve etc.

Part 4: Other resources
Suggestions of books, websites videos etc that have GK info.

Animal has made a suggestion that we include a section on how to be the parent/partner of a GK.

The parents section could help to explain the different terms, materials and or equipment maybe even a buying guide, what to look for and what equipment is designed for what (OBO SP's are for a more upright player etc).

While we all want top of the line equipment not every parent/partner can afford it, if we can inform parents then they will not feel "out of place" when buying GK gear.

I  set up a wiki for the goalkeepers' guide.  The URL is http://fh-gk.pbwiki.com/

You can view it without a password. The PW for editing is "stopballs" (without quotaiton marks).

Most of you have more experience in goal than I do.  I do have some experience editing and publishing.  I'm glad to help this thing happen if a bunch of you can contribute content.  What do you think of the Wiki as a way to make this happen? If the organizers decide that FHF is adequate not only for discussion but also for posting drafts and editing them, then I'll be glad to remove the wiki.  But if it can complement FHF in a useful way, go ahead and use it.

Hi Dan, Great idea but from my point of view I'd rather just use FHF at this stage (and more specifically this sub board), otherwise it gets too hard to compile various threads.  Once we have something a bit more concrete I think a wiki is a great idea.
Thanks for the help!

Okay, Dr.,  I won't destroy it but will change the PW until you and Andy decide it's the tool to use.

statement “I played in ‘D’ grade for the Humpty Doo Association at home.” Earns the happy expatriate Aussie an immediate spot in the national team of the country that he is visiting.

Can't wait to use that. :D
