So what's the hockey playing got to do with the ages ?

There were 8 possible combinations. Only two had the same sum when added together (9,2,2 and 6,6,1), if the house next door was any combination apart from one of these, Mary would of instantly known the combination of the ages. However, because the house next door was number 13, Mary still did not have sufficient information to work out the ages. However, when she heard "the eldest played hockey", she knew it was 9,2,2 because that was the only combination of the two that had a oldest child.... I could of said that the oldest played golf, rugby, cricket, pretty much anything etc...

Was the wife blind? Thats the only thing I can think off - I mean if she was blind it wouldn't really matter if it was light or dark, would it?

That's the 'clever' answer, I'd giuess, but there could be other, quite valid ones, like the aforementioned battery-light, a torch, an auxiliary generator... Happy
