Has everyone heard about the new FIH 'rule' about banning frontstick tomahawks? what do you think about it? they have said its alright to use it in a tackle but not to actually hit the ball. has anyone actually seen it being blown yet?

To blow it you have to see it. I know some people who do that style of hit but it is easy to disguise and not that easy to see hence they can get away with it. To be honest I do not understand why they have singled this shot out when ther is more dangeous things that need to be dealt with.

Magpie i agree with you it is rather hard to pick up. I rekon they singled it out cause it is hard to keep them along the ground. and its the player doing them may as well jsut do a regular hit.

When you say more dangerous things i dont suppose that you mean the dragflick? i know you and me are alwasy goin to disagree on this point but irekon if you get rid of them then it will be back to the case of the keeper lying down across the net and nobody can score of short corners

I'm not sure what hit you're taking about.  (Worthless goalie alert)

Don't worry Garli,

We don't need to know about them, they are so innacurate they rarely bother us keepers ;D

For those of us with nore than just one eye here is the link to the subject http://www.fihockey.org/vsite/vcontent/page/custom/0,8510,1181-172390-189608-37873-223127-custom-item,00.html.

To be honest nerd_is_the_word I do not want to see the drag flick removed or any skill (tomahawks included) or GK's going back to logging, I just do not want to be the Umpire resposible for a game where somebody gets seriously hurt because it was done without skill. I would like to remove the 18" rule on the first shot on a PC and just make it so that it is judged on danger only.

By the way Basil has read my paper on the Drag Flick and is now getting other views before commenting.

Way down south we call this particular style of hit "the frumpy".  I see no problem with it and am truly amazed the FIH felt a need to specifically comment on it.  Given  the broadening of the danger rule to leave it up to umpire's discretion, I would have thought controlling this technique was well handled under the existing rules.  I know plenty of players who lift the ball when hitting on the forestick or slap hitting, and even more who lift it when attempting to pass the ball using the reverse stick (tomahawk pass).  It seems pointless outlawing it, especially given the ambiguous wording of the FIH briefing note...

I think that this decision will not end up being permanent.  Players will find ways around it, and umpires will probably tend to ignore it (as Magpie says, you have to see it to call it...).

We're talking about a forehand hit with the edge of the stick, much like a tomahawk is on the reverse.  We call that a frumpy, but if other people call it something else (or use the term frumpy for something else) then please, enlighten me! ;D

ok here it is, well from what i know, we are all talking about the same edge, that is the top edge of the stick where the head is hooked towards, a tomahawk is hitting it with the edge and the swing coming from ur left i.e back stick, a frumpy is hitting it with the edge coming from your right i.e fore stick. thats what i know it as, however i have a mate who hits fore stick with his bottom edge (makes u think its gonna lift every time) and he calls that a frumpy.
