Past Player, Umpire Coach

« on: July 18, 2008, 02:06:22 AM »

Have read that Ric Charlesworth is interested in coaching the kookas, present coach Barry Dancer's contract expires after the olympics so the position would become vacant.

Several issues may need to be addressed. Currently Charlesworth is/has an appointment for FIH and this contract expires in December. Also several issues from IOA, but these will be dealt with I am sure.

The rumour/notion has been around for quite a while that Charlesworth was going to replace Dancer after the Olympics.

Personally hope it happens as I'd loved to see how he goes stepping into a set up with a strong base of established players and how they will react.

Not sure his reputation has been enhanced by his last two appointments !!

Althought Charlesworth used to be a very good player in his time do you not think he is a bit overrated??
Don't get me wrong I think in his time he was on of the top players in hockey but as a coach not really sure.

I certainly think you could pose some interesting questions about his coaching philosphies if you wanted to dig below what is an outstanding record.

What happened at NZ Cricket is a whole different ball game !!

His record of successes in 7 years as coach as the Aus women speaks for his ability as a coach. Never lost a major tournament.

Rick is a very, very good coach, but he did not do well in India, this is a bit like Barry Dancer with England/GB. Is it that the cultural differences in styles of play and differing attitudes to how the game is played makes it difficult for very good coaches ideas be accepted in countries that they are now or have been coaching.
This was discussed at lenght at the last EHF course i last attended and all the coaches from all the nations agreed on one thing that the coach had to learn about the country, its attidudes to the sport and its style of play. They could not impose their or their countries style of play on another nation.
This may be the reason why very good coaches struggle to have a lot of success and even acceptance in their countries of residence.
Again this is only a personal thought and i am sure the forum members have many examples of success but at top international level i am not sure.

I am absolutely positive he will be a success as coach of the Kookas. Yes

I have talked to one of the current olympians 2 weeks ago and it is pretty much confirmed that Charley will take the reins.  I also believe that horrible aka (Mark Hagar) will coach the women's

That doesn't make the 'aka' any less valid!

Well the aka is inappropriately used in this instance. It would be more appropriate to say:

Mark Hagar aka 'Horrible"

If you've known him for as long as I have and have played in the same teams as him, then it is "Horrible" aka Mark Hagar not the other way around.  But that is all semantics.

Looks like only one of these is likely to come true.

Still no official word from Hockey Australia but the rumor mill is working overtime.
