As long as the deflection is just that, using a "slight backswing", it's not a hit. Some "deflections" players have tried to sell me on involve a great deal of backswing so as to redirect the ball far against it's former path - that makes it a one-timer hit.

Thank goodness. I had a feeling that this was the case, but I thought it best to make sure, in case I was missing something major. Don't want to embarrass myself on the pitch! (well, at least not for my umpiring abilities)

Think hititng with the thin edge should be outlawed in all cases as you have no way of knowing where the ball is going to go and safety of players is what ruells are for.

Jay, we've absolutely beaten this horse to death several times already on the forum. Either search the Umpiring Corner for 'forehand edge' or posts by UmpireHockey, who is now a member here, and you'll find all the discussions.

(That's what you get for resurrecting a thread from early March! Lol)

Yes, and I do believe the article -- now that the topic, horse, and author was beat to death -- accurately reflects what the HRB meant to have happen (meant to have eliminated).

Cheers...Cris
