My 9 year old is intensely interested in the results, having been brainwashed by Mr.g9's conservative talk.  I am making him wear the  "change" sticker I got at the polls today as a lesson in the politics of "mom rules!"

It might have more to do with the wording, as it looks like it's directed at the Americans on the forum.  In that, 12 is probably about right.
Warning to the Canadians:  prepare for a serious influx of Yanks, if the Republicans get in again! Ooh

Didn't notice that - since the American Religious Right deem it perfectly acceptable to meddle in Canadian politics, I feel I deserve a symbolic vote to reduce their influence in their own country's government.

At least you don't have to share a country with those people.

What I don't understand is this.  My brother-in-law is a resident alien in the US.  He's lived over there for 14 years; he works; he pays his taxes.  Yet he can't vote; not even in the town elections.  Isn't that taxation without representation?  Wasn't that what kicked it all off in the first place...?

(On the other hand, given his political leanings, it's probably just as well he's not voting this year...!)

Yep garli - know all about that.

I also know that "No taxation without representation" was the one of the rallying cries of the pro-independence American colonists back in the 1760s & 1770s and the lack of representation for the US colonists in the British Parliament was one of the many things that led to the War of Independence.  That's why I don't understand why my bro-in-law pays his taxes (fair enough - he benefits from the services they provide) but doesn't get a vote, given that it was one of the founding tenets of the US.

I think common sense dictates that I go to bed.  Let's just hope the outcome is decided tonight and not some time in January like back in 2000!

I've hung on until 00:45 GMT.  The US media seems to be being ultra-cautious: they've only called Kentucky & Vermont so far and my fatigue is now overcoming my intrigue...  I'll give it until 01:00 GMT.
