I'll be checking on the results when I get home from my meeting. One of my American friends says she has her bags all packed in case the result forces her to immigrate up north Tongue

What I don't understand is this.  My brother-in-law is a resident alien in the US.  He's lived over there for 14 years; he works; he pays his taxes.  Yet he can't vote; not even in the town elections.  Isn't that taxation without representation?  Wasn't that what kicked it all off in the first place...?

(On the other hand, given his political leanings, it's probably just as well he's not voting this year...!)

Because he's not a citizen. Same reason I can't vote in European elections.

If he wants to become naturalized, why not go ahead and pursue that?

red, like this country ever means what it says.

Also, Obama in a freakin' land slide.  You should have seen how stoked everyone was when they called it.  My friend had an election results party.  it was pretty impressive.  Complete with state electoral vote beer pong.

Now I just need 8 and 4 to end up the right way.  (Uh, and 2, 7, and 10)

Because he's proud to be a Brit, but resents paying taxes without having a voice.  Wars have been started over less you know!   Wink

So it's not that he can't vote in the US but that he's chosen not to pursue citizenship in the country he lives in and pays taxes in.  I'm okay with that, nothing worth starting a war over.

Very few things are worth starting a war over, my friend.  Very few.

Anyway, back to the matter in hand.  I love this quote that I saw earlier today on a comment on the Guardian's story about Obama's wonderful acceptance speech*: "This is a man the whole world can unite behind.  Welcome back, America. We've missed you."

* If you've not seen / read / heard Obama's speech, do yourself a favour: click on the link above and watch it.  It's certainly the greatest piece of oratory of the 21st century so far.  And to be fair to McCain his concession speech was fabulous too.  They both show Bush up for the inarticulate booby that he is.

I was rather annoyed when the republicans starting booing McCain when he annonced that he had phoned Obama to say well done. How vulgar  Frown

But yay Obama won. Its good times from now on. Hopefully.
Lots of fun in school today. Most for Obama but some were not so keen.

Now what for Palin?

If Senator Stevens, who looks like he'll keep his seat, gets booted from the Senate, Palin will probably appoint herself in his place as senator.

The scary thing is that Palin has already stated that she wants to stand against Obama in 4 years time.  Baffled

She'll have to win the Republic party's nomination first...
