Yeah i have seen a guy in a game do these, and tried a few when mucking around, you can get some good power on them but they are hard to control.

two things on the feet thing.

1) if you change your grip slightly it is possible to get decent power behind the ball, although not as much as when you have the ball between your feet.

2) the new rules say that you have to start behind the ball and you can take as many steps as you want, that basically means that once the umpire blows the whistle you can move your feet into the correct spot then flick the ball. you dont have to flick the ball with both feet behind it.

I agree with NITW... taking a few steps forward then flicking the ball is still legal. There wouldnt neccessarily be a dragging action, any more so than a player flicking it with his feet in front of the ball on his normal side.

Alternatively, swap hands around.  Left hand becomes the lower hand and the right hand at the top.
Practice it enough and im sure it would feel ...almost... as natural as a 'normal' flick

How can this be legal? you can not wait for the blow from the ump and the stand in front of the ball, i'm sure you must play the ball before you can stand infront of the ball ?

happy to be corrected on this but thats how i see it

No you have to be behind and in playing distance before the whistle is blown. You can then move as much as you like after only subject to the umpire deciding you haven't taken the flick "without delay".

No need for the 'star', IMO....... as long as the umpire doesn't judge you to have 'dragged' the ball, it is perfectly legal to step 'past' the ball before pushing, flicking or scooping it goalwards.

In fact it is not at all easy to do a proper flick unless you put your left foot in front of the ball...you cannot get effective weight-transfer and it have to be all 'arms & shoulders' ....virtually impossible for anyone who is not fairly strong in the upper body.

So to make a reverse-scoop you could step past the ball with both feet and 'shovel' it at the goal!(some players even reverse the grip of their RH to facilitate this).

Just so everyone is completely clear on the rules:

Quote

13.5 Taking a penalty stroke :
...
d) the player taking the stroke must stand behind and within playing distance of the ball before beginning the stroke
...
g) the whistle is blown when the player taking the stroke and the player defending it are in position

h) the player taking the stroke must not take it until the whistle has been blown

The player taking the stroke or the player defending it must not delay the taking of the stroke.

i) the player taking the stroke must not feint at playing the ball

j) the player taking the stroke must push, flick or scoop the ball and is permitted to raise it to any height

Using a ‘dragging’ action to play the ball at a penalty stroke is not permitted.

k) the player taking the stroke must play the ball only once and must not subsequently approach either the ball or the player defending the stroke.

So, Smithy68i is wrong and pretty much everyone else is right. You can start behind the ball, within playing distance, wait for the whistle to blow, step in front of the ball with your back to the net and shovel the ball at the GK.

All clear?

Yep.  This is what I do on the few occasions I get to take a PS..it's very effective and quite legal.
