Awwww Keeely!   Rolleyes

We were all waiting to see how long he would keep booting it with no reply. Well I was anyway. Sorry Mani.  Sorry

But yes a PM would be a good idea. I suspect Ragy is OK with the self-pass after all.

I believe in fairness! -

And as a fair chunk of people who 'prophecised' the self pass as equivalent to the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse - but who now are amazingly quiet - i think they should come out.
Even if they still think its a shite rule (which it clearly isnt!), then it'd be quite amusing to see someone dig their heels in.

Ragy was one of them who i know would be man enough to admit he may have made a snap judgement but would take a little 'banter' the right way!
(I stayed away from others as i wouldnt want a 'fatwah' being placed upon me!!!!)

Haha, sorry, my hiatus from the forum was so enjoyable I forgot to comeback.

I have only played a couple of summer games, so yet to really get to grips with use of the rule. And although I will concede, I have enjoyed the pace of the game being maintained, I have seen some odd moments where defenders (bless 'em) seem to utilise it a little inappropriately - perhaps just to hold the ball a teeny bit longer.
I have found the direct hit in to the 'd' more confusing, the tempation is too great when you see someone make a good lead.
I have another summer game next week, so will try and put a few moves together then and tell you how I go - thought with my current fitness level, I may be better off not utilising the self-pass.

In answer to Mani though, I think, think, I could be turned to it's favour.

I'm sure we might all admit being a bit quick to judge. And as we now see, the FIH rule improved on EHL's original, like having 'two actions' to sort the anguish about how far it moved.

And since Ragyrascal has answered, I'll put my hand up and thank those who patiently explained to me how two touches (not 3) were Ok before the ball enters the circle. Now it's here, I can see how wrong I was.

Has employed the tactic from rugby yet. Where as soon as the whistle is blown for a penalty ( what is a free hit in hockey) get possession of the ball take the fee hit and go. Any defenders within 5 m are out of the game for those few seconds and with a little though from you team mates a quick break is on.

I am interested in how  Umpires would view the defenders if in the quickly taken free hit they make no attempt to make the 5m  or out habit attempt to make a tackle in that 5m. Should it be another free from the the full 5m from the first offence?  Would speak to the attacking team if they tried this a number of times advancing up the pitch.

If you play rugby you will understand the tactic/situation I am trying to illustrate

Absolutely you can just take it and go without waiting for the other team to get 5.

If they attempt to interfere in play before you've gone 5 metres then it's quite feasibly a yellow card.

I have been letting the first tackle go and awarding a second free hit from occurance of the foul.....after that its gets progressed 10 yards...then it can go to greens or yellows...but generally they are getting the hint at 10 yards.

What you need to be careful as an umpire is watching for the attacker running towards the retreating player in an attempt to get the foul by not being 5 yards. I have seen this occasionaly and I have awarded free hits and cards accordingly.

its whole intent is to get the game flowing...if fouls occur then the play normally is away too fast for most defenders to even get a stick in.  What I have seen is a decrease in players giving the ball back to the defenders. Instead just running away.

What foozbear said...

But with the typical addition that when it is Rugby style taking, it is typically done on a freehit on a breakaway where they don't want defenders the opportunity to drop. If a player is within 5 and breaking down the play, the control ladder tends to be a little shorter.

In response to my own post I saw the new rules in action at Eng v. Ned today the Dutch did it rugby style tkaing quick free hits crowding and making the English players retreat quickly. A few yellow card where shown as where 10 metre advancements too

As JTS wrote: ... the control ladder is a bit shorter.

By about 20 minutes in, both NL and ENG had warnings from umpire Vazquez about interfering with the free hit, then Vazquez green carded NL, and Estabanez green carded England for it. Everyone was careful enough after that to avoid a yellow, although the Dutch missed at least one opportunity to sucker Tindall into interfering, by holding the hit until he decided to retreat.

I don't recall any 'up-10' calls, except that Estabanez wasn't having it when the Dutch placed a free hit about 15m up the pitch from the offence.

The one yellow to Richard Alexander was probably for physical play, but with the EH advertising banners the crowd couldn't know for sure. Estabanez gave him 10 minutes, probably because of Alexander's green for a similar offence in the first half.
