Wear padded shorts, if you can't move very well then either get used to it or remove the offending panels.  Its not worth the damage you could do to yourself by going without.
I wear clouds which the panels cant be removed.
If its not worth the damage then why do people still go fully dutch when there is a high probabilty of a broken elbow at the expense of a little more movement.
American football shorts do sounds like a good idea as they are designed with high impacts inmind.

because you're far more likely to get smacked on the thigh than the elbow!

Clouds with panles that cant be removed  Ooh I currently wear the cloud wraparound thingy's and every single panel can be taken out. theres slots to slide them in and out mine have velcro fastenings to keep them in.

amen brother!

i used to wear Ice Hockey shorts(not goalie ones) and they gave AMAZING movement.  Not restrictive at all.  But they also don't have ANY inner thigh protection.  I'd have been hit on my inner thighs (undercuts) at least half a dozen times using them, and always ended up with awful awful awful bruises.  Real nasty looking things.
I tried finding a hockey girdle that offered the same maneuverability but protected my inner thighs, and settled for the Griffon one (2nd from the top range).  It gave (to me) far more maneuverability then Obo, or any other brand i could try on. It protects my inner thighs (which was number 1 for me) but i still feel undercuts through them, and get the odd bruise.
I would TOTALLY recommend them if you're looking at better movement with decent protection.

I couldn't imagine playing without ANY shorts though.  I seem to regularly make saves with my upper legs, and i don't log.  Mind you i don't usually try to get my hand in the way of them.  If it's coming at my thighs/groin, i just brace, close my legs, and take it.

I would never play without my padded shorts. I can't imagine how painful it would be getting smacked in side of the hip by a stick or a ball. Its probably more dangerous breaking your hip than your elbow. Like I don't mind getting smacked in the thigh despite hurting like crazy, but its generally just a bad sting and leaves behind a good souvenir - but no protection up by the hips is a bit worrying.

I have the old Obo Hotpants (unfortunately in luminous Green) and never found a problem with mobility.
I also play with full arm protection. No way would I play without. recently switched from the old coooper arm gaurds to Obo's. Need some protection as I chipped an elbow a few years ago diving indoor.

I can't say I'd recommend playing without some kind of padded shorts, I have recently got myself a nice TK girdle which I would highly recommend, but even with that I occasionally get hit and end up with some pretty interesting looking bruises- I'd hate to think what my legs would look like if I had nothing....... Eek!

I think Tim Jessulat (Der Club an der Alster) does not wear any padded shorts even though he faces top players.

He is a top keeper and can therefore do as he pleases.  But one thing is for sure - if he sustains a preventable (preventable by wearing padded shorts) injury that will keep him out the game for half a season his coach will be severely ****ed off.

You get away with not wearing arm protection because your hands are (hopefully) quick enough moving laterally to prevent an injury. This is certainly not the case with thigh protection. Your legs are simply not quick enough to get your leg guard up to cover in time.

Quite funny discussing this topic, as last week our 3rd's goalie(grass league) doesn't wear thigh pads (due to the level he's used too), and was training with the myself and the 2nd's keeper.  15 mins into training he had been hit between the thighs.
Boy did he whinge about that the rest of training.

I can certainly see and feel the advantage of limited arm protection.  I can't see or feel any advantage from no thigh protection.  I think it's simply a case that there IS plenty of decent thigh protection that offers decent protection without limiting your movement. Whereas MOST arm protection WILL limit are in some way restrict your arm movement.

Yer the 6's keeper at my club plays like your 3rd's keeper I think, although we don't have grass leagues, only astros, so he doesn't train and onyl plays matches fr 6's and 5's at a push. I was amazed to think that he did not wear them but then when I saw the standard hewas playing at it was understandable. However, all the others need is a ringer and he can get badly bruised!

It's crazy to play without padded shorts, even though I wear a good one, whenever I get hit in that area, I bruise pretty bad.
