Although I created this topic I haven't really commented on it recently :S

The only reason I thought about losing the shorts was due to my legguards being too big for me. I have since replaced them however and the idea of getting rid of the shorts looks to be a tad stupid as now the majority of my thigh is now exposed.
Cheers for all the comments and arguments for and mainly against.

...But one thing is for sure - if he sustains a preventable (preventable by wearing padded shorts) injury that will keep him out the game for half a season his coach will be severely ****ed off.

I really play without paded shorts und so far i haven´t major injuries. Some bruises but my movements are faster than with paded shorts.

For me the keepers playing without protections on the upper arms, are crazy. Bruises on my legs are    less influencing my game. Hits on the arms are more hurting...

In my opinion, shorts are essential and I would never play without them. I get hit in the shorts at least once a fortnight. I also wear OBO cloud bodi arma, I think its faster than armpads and has great protection.

You may be faster in one or two games where you don't wear shorts or elbow guards, but what about those other games you might miss because of a fractured elbow or a blood clot in your thigh. You need to find the right balance between protection and speed.

Just curious - does that mean you play with no protection for "the boys" as well? I'm sitting here typing and find myself crossing my legs and bending over to pretect myself just thinking about that.

I find shorts easier to slide with.  Don't hurt ur bum,

Really depends of the brand of course but also the size.
I Forgot the name of mine, not well known, but no problem to move.

The big advantage, is that fully equiped i feel like a warrior going for battle.

I ask sometimes some player to just hit thé ball into me, just to remind me that i havé nothing to fear.

Than even with a slight lack of movement, u can just go for it, And barely no harm done

I've got a beautiful bruise where I've been hit in the crotch, and not had any padding on the thigh!

Ok... Well I take shots to the shorts at a rate of about 1 per week at the moment (playing for uni team in 3 training sessions + 1 match a week). The reason they hit my shorts is that the shots are too fast for me to get my LHP from my side to in front of my legs. As you should be able to imagine these are therefore quite hard. I would NEVER play without padded shorts. Even through my OBO Cloud I feel every one and normally get a light bruise that lasts for 24 hours.

the ball will always manage to find the spots the shorts don't protect anyway. had two lovely bruises recently when that happened.
worst I ever had was a game at Uni where a really hard undercut got me on the inside of the thigh. Didnt realise until we got into the changing rooms that it split the skin leaving me with a blood covered leg. Nice!!

He looked like he was about to take a huge reverse to the shorts in that last game just there... Thats dangerous. Especially at that level.

Why was the topic (and the one relating to arm guards) moved to the Goal Gear Question section? I mean, it's not really about "gear" is it? Keely? Too much policing going on here! It's like umpiring... don't invent stuff... just blow what you see!

Well nick, might be different for you because you're at a higher level, but I generally find people hit the ball harder towards the shorts region. Also there is more tissue, so more pain, meaning you probably aren't going to be playing on if you get him.
Maybe the things you can to to your arm are more serious, but the arm area is sort of black and white, if it gets hit and nothings broken, sure it will sting, but you can play on. To the legs, if theres nothing in the way, believe me, even if its not broken its a killer, and you probably won't want to keep going.
However, I'd keep both, because I don't actually feel restricted in my arms or shorts.
