As I understand it, the keeper can only play the ball with their gloves as part of a goal saving action, or to move the ball away from the possibility of a goal scoring action.

The goal saving action bit only applies to propelling the ball with the hands - they are allowed to stop or deflect at any time. Quite where carrying the ball fits in is not all that clear (hence this discussion!)

Agreed - but I would deem bouncing it up and down on one glove (repeatedly) as propelling the ball.

I know Im late on this one BUT....

in the OP's scenario the player has taken a shot, THIS means the attacker must be within lets say 14 metres of the goal keeper. the shot comes in the ball goes up for...O.....2 seconds. How long does it take the player hitting the ball to follow up on 2 seconds? would that make the ball dangerous?

My inclination here is the keeper wouldnt really have much chance to "catch" the ball and run out with it AND NOT cause obstruction.
What I do see happening and it may be a better discussion...is if the first ball goes straight up, and an attacker runs in. IS THAT ATTACKER causing danger on a lifted ball seeing as the keeper had first position?

Being in such an enclosed space as the shooting circle, many times this is called quicker and the opportunity as the OP has discussed doesnt arise.

If we establish that the keeper had first position and the attacker doesnt approach within the 5 metres...Id allow the keepr to "catch"  it and drop it on the ground for subsequent play. The other players should be 5 metres and therefore outside playing distance.

The only reason a PC is given is mostly for the safety of the keeper...most forwards dont care where the ball is lodged...I know I didnt when I was younger  Wink
