Check out the Women's PanAm Cup HERE

Even though Argentina are favourites, the US stand a good chance of defeating the team that dominates competition in the Americas. Also, Canada can come away with some hardware from this event.
Check out the pictures link, I like the Master's selection, pretty cool.

Enjoy. Share your thoughts. Support your team.

Those are great shots, they must have just been added as I didn't see them yesterday.

Interesting to see the relative youth/inexperience of the side Argentina took to this event:

No Aymar, Garcia, Aicega, Margalot, Rossi, Russo, Burkhart, Gulla... They've got their young drag-flicker Barrionuevo, their 2nd string GK Succi, Kanevsky, Luchetti and Rebecchi but no one else from their Olympic squad. Either there's been a lot of retirements or this is essentially a "B" team. I haven't seen any announcements on WorldHockey.org but maybe I missed them in the flood of Aussie retirements?

I think that as Argentina qualify automatically for the next Women's world cup as hosts, they have decided to use this tournament for development, an approach that has often been used by the German men, even in Champions trophies. The only major risk I see with this is that it may open the door for the USA women to win and help create the belief that could lead to future victories for the USA. That said, it will give invaluable experience to Argentina's younger players and the coaches a chance to see how they perform under pressure.

Makes sense, I didn't know they were hosting in 2010.

I'll check and get back to you. Might take a bit since the umps are probably going to be in transit today.

Apparently, the protest was over Argentina's seventh stroke.

(From The Asbury Park Press, NJ, USA)

"Noel Barrionuevo stepped away from her stroke after Scottish umpire Jean Duncan blew her whistle for the penalty to be taken. Under the laws of the game, there can be no delay after the whistle.

"The U.S. said that penalty should be considered a miss. The U.S. would then have won because Caroline Nichols, who was next up, made the goal.

"But two other rules were also clouding the case for the appeals committee. First, the whistle can be blown only when the player was in position, and Duncan was believed to have awarded the score because Barrionuevo was not ready. Second, a team cannot appeal an umpire's decision."

You could also have made a case regarding Argentina's second goal, which was originally disallowed but given upon an umpire conference. I didn't see anything wrong with the goal, which was a free hit deflected up on the goalkeeper, the rebound of which was put in.

Thanks for the info, TOTC. We're currently having a discussion in the Umpiring Corner on this exact topic, so I think it would be really useful for everyone who wants to explore this ARG v USA PS competition issue join in at Re: Penalty Flick, where all the umpires can benefit from this real-world example.

Otherwise, the rest of the Pan Am Cup talk can stay right here. :)
