Following the completion of the Champions Trophy in Melbourne (AUS), the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has released the updated FIH Men’s World Rankings table.

The top four positions in the table remain unchanged, with London 2012 Olympic Gold medallists Germany still holding the number 1 spot followed by Champions Trophy winners Australia (2nd), Olympic & Champions Trophy Silver medallists The Netherlands (3rd) and England (4th).

Success in the Champions Trophy for the Kookaburras has seen them slightly narrow the gap between themselves and Germany, while recent strong performances from the Dutch have seen them increase their advantage over England.

Thanks to their brilliant Bronze medal at the Champions Trophy, Pakistan are the most improved nation in the top ten having leapt from 9th place to 5th. New Zealand continue to hold 6th place ahead of Spain (7th), Champions Challenge finalists Korea (8th), Belgium (9th) and Champions Challenge winners Argentina (10th).

You can see why the significant jump if you look at the overall rankings.

    1 GERMANY EUR 2528
    2 AUSTRALIA OCE 2500
    3 NETHERLANDS EUR 2308
    4 ENGLAND EUR 2050
    5 PAKISTAN ASI 1760
    6 NEW ZEALAND OCE 1743
    7 SPAIN EUR 1723
    8 KOREA ASI 1703
    9 BELGIUM EUR 1698

5th to 9th are separated by less than 70 ranking points which will almost definitely change following the next ranking tournament and could honestly see Pakistan back in 9th!

^^ 5th to 9th are closely ranked. May I say that it's a moment of joy for Pakistan hockey after a long while. The fans have something to celebrate and cheer about. We cannot ignore that sports has suffered immensely in Pakistan. When I say suffered I'm being mild. A medal in any prestigious tournament is always a boost for any nation. Ranking improvement is another bonus. Frankly, it's a miracle that Pakistan has managed to achieve such a feat. It's never easy to perform on the field when there are so many hurdles in your path. On a different note, if Pakistan keep their form they can keep their ranking in tact and even improve on it. Although, consistency is always a question mark. Pakistan has a rich history in field hockey. Pakistan never had any shortage of talent. That's not the problem. The problem in Pakistan field hockey has always related to mismanagement. When field hockey nations like Pakistan tackle mismanagement they can reign like in their glory days.
