    Hi everyone,

I wondered how many players are there in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Korea, Ireland, Scotland, Argentina, Spain... ?

I only found the numbers of the following countries :

    Belgium : +- 38.000
    Netherlands : +- 250.000
    Germany : +- 80.000
    England (U.K. ?) : +- 35.000
    France : +- 15.000

Belgium is at 44.000 now. They are expecting to grow to 50.000 in the next two years. many clubs in Brussels have long waiting lists already, because there is a shortage of pitches.

Belgium; is hockey evenly spread throughout the country - or is there a concentration on one part ie. the flemish region?

As said on another thread, hockey is mainly a sport for the upper-middle class. In Belgium they reside mainly in Flanders and focused around Antwerp and Brussels. Looking at the Belgian Eredivsie there is only one club from Wallonia.

In malta we are around 100. That's 100 people out of a population of 400,000 which brings it to 0.00025% of the total population. 5 clubs in total.

5 clubs? You barely have 5 teams!

As of their 2015 annual reports:
    • ~98000 in Australia.
    • ~52000 in New Zealand.

Ta. Do we conclude that hockey is more common amongst those speaking dutch and have dutch heritage/leanings (for want of better words) or there are fewer upper/middle class folks in the french-speaking parts ;):p

We got around 300 players in total in Sweden. So as a country we are smaller than most European clubs.

In Belgium you'll find a heavy concentration in Brussels and its suburbs.

1050 IXELLES - Ixelles Hockey Club - Rue Volta
    1070 ANDERLECHT - R.S. Amicale Anderlecht , Drève Olympique, 11
1080 BRUXELLES - Avia Hockey CLub - Avenue du Château, 1
1140 EVERE - White Star, Av. des Anc. Combattants, 350
    1150 WOLUWE-ST-PIERRE - Royal Ombrage H.C. - Avenue E. Parmentier, 81
    1150 WOLUWE-ST-PIERRE - Royal Orée THB - Drève des Brûlés, 59
1160 AUDERGHEM - Parc Hockey Club - Avenue Schaller, 56/B
1180 UCCLE - Royal Leopold Club - Avenue Adolphe Dupuich, 42
1180 UCCLE - Royal Racing Club Bruxelles - Avenue des Chênes, 125

Actually hockey in Belgium reflects very much the history of Belgium.
Traditionally the sport is Brussels based and played by the francophone "bourgeoisie". In Flanders you had a few clubs like La Gantoise who were catering for a local francophone elite (in a sea of dutch speakers) .
This situation changed from the seventies. Clubs in Flanders became more flemish, and the city of Antwerp and its suburbs hosted more and more teams. With the growing prosperity in Flanders and due to the influence of the many dutch immigrants and the proximity of the Netherlands, hockey clubs are springing up and blossoming virtually everywhere in Flanders.
In Wallonia (french speaking Belgium) you'll find a concentration of clubs south of Brussels (Brabant Wallon) .
If I count right, you still have 2 french-speaking clubs in Flanders: Linkebeek and Baudouin (Dilbeek). The latter club fighting a bitter battle with the flemish authorities impeding and blocking the growth of the club. Seems to be part of good old linguistic battle between dutch and french speakers.

I played a season in Antwerp in 2000. At the social level we had some teams in the club that were more french speaking and others that were more Flemish speaking. I ended up in a Flemish speaking team although I spoke French but not Flemish.
Overall though clubs there had facilities that most English clubs could only dream of. Big membership and wealthy benefactors.

I know that in the USA, approximmately 1.5 million people played in 2014, but that's from ages 6 and up. So, adjusting for that, the amount of teenagers to adults that play is probably a little less than half of that, so maybe 600,000 people? That being said, a lot of the mplay for school teams, and nothing more, so again, I'd take away half of the teenagers, giving roughly 450,000 people. This estimate would include teenagers and adults playing for clubs or collages. Only counting clubs though...? I could only guess.

Unfortunately I would say 90% of that number are girls. Males are extrememly limited in number.

Good information on Belgium. My only experience is the north-east where the clubs I've seen the facilities are excellent. Interesting that some clubs are "full" - that really should never happen, we want people to play! hopefully they are directed towards other clubs and they don't lose out.
Wonder how many UK clubs are "full" - and what actually constitutes being full? Too many players and not enough teams? Limit on how much insurance is needed? Other reasons?
