First of all it's guidance for umpires - not a dictat, so I think there is flexibility in the application of that clause.

If it was deleted I'd continue to judge all lifted balls solely on danger, as I do at the moment. The paragraph which precedes A flick or scoop towards an opponent within 5 metres is considered dangerous. says: If the ball is raised over an opponent’s stick or body on the ground, even within the circle, it is permitted unless judged to be dangerous.

Read that in conjunction with the first quote, and any lift over the opponent's body within 5m is automatically dangerous... which is clearly contradictory.

I favour the framework not straight jacket approach, therefore I'm happy to continue to interpret each situation that develops in front of me based on the specific circumstances - in this case, danger, and my interpretation of it.

I think that that amounts to ignoring part of the rule , Twister. :(

I think it's applying the rules within the spirit of the game, rather than to the letter of the law, Twister. :)

And if you read carefully through the posters on this subject, they have their own interpretation of this rule.

It does not matter if you keep printing the rule book on posts because that is not always so clear and to the point of what the rule is?

FWIW I fully agree with Deegum.

This is the reason I will probably never take up the whistle. To me the rule seems perfectly clear and yet senior umpires are telling us that it is open to interpretation. I don't understand the thought process in which they take a perfectly clear rule and muddy it until everyone is confused.

But I know I am in the minority so I will revert to reading and tutting.
