Dear Forum member; Recently some email harvesting was attempted on our FHF forum. Whilst most members choose to hide their email addresses, there is some contact and profile information viewable by members as soon as they join. The moderators and admins believe that it is more appropriate for some features of FHF membership to be restricted until a minimum post count is reached. This may help to dissuade persons from joining FHF for purposes other than to engage in productive communication with fellow members, whilst not restricting the basic features of the FHF forum. When these changes are made, new members (Junior Members) will be able to participate in the forum, but extended features such as Karma, Calendar, Downloads, Gallery, Polls and Attachments will have only limited functionality. Junior members will not be able to view the memberlist or other member's profiles. Whilst every attempt has been made to ensure that the right combination of forum permissions has been put in place, if any unintended consequences emerge please bring them to our attention. Neo, technical moderator.
why don't you message all members and warn them of the member who is spamming the forum members. Surely you will know who it is. But if it is just someone going through all the members, copying and pasting their details into email then good luck, as most of us have filters in place in our email and it will end up in the junk file.
Thanks for addressing this Neo, I believe the new limitations are reasonable and proportionate to solving the problem.
the thing is though, people could spam everyones email by logging on as a guest, as there was nothing in place to stop guests or members that have only posted once or twice looking at other members info. I agree with keely. I think you have done the right thing!! cheers neo!! viks
I think some people have misunderstood what I have said. I was asking for the Mods to email the members with the problems and the rules and understanding of the problems that have occurred. You will be able to see who the regular posters are and who are the ones misusing the site. Also I think if someone is new then they should not be able to see anyone names and address until they have reached at least 50 posts. This is what I do for another forum I run, but, this site is not hockey related.
Ah, if only it was that simple... Professional Spammers use sites that either hide the originating email address, or use virus-compromised machines to send spam on their behalf so that the identity of the real spammer is hidden. Then there's the harvesters who make their money from collecting email addresses and on-selling them. So there's no bogey-person on the forum who sent spam to members to tell anyone about. However, FYI, even the mild recent tightening of the membership permissions has restricted that feature to just 25% of the members.
Updated change to Permissions: The admins have made the following change to the membership status and permissions... Junior Members: Junior members now have to reach 25 Posts before becoming a reserve member The Sin Bin: The Sin Bin has been restricted to Reserve members and above Some unsociable behaviour by one member towards another has led to this action being taken. It is now considered that only members who have posted sufficiently will have developed a social conscience and will have some empathy and tolerance for other members. As the Sin Bin may contain provocative content, FHF does not believe it should be available for people who simply want to lurk around and not contribute to the forum.
I would like to have my status pushed up to reserve without reaching the minimum posts if that is possible? I have had to email Keely before as i could not PM and have had to do the same to Ragyrascal, i now have a thread with one of my sticks up for sale and cannot reply to PMs as i can't send any! I know this may not be normal procedure, but i have been a member for a long time, Keely and Ragy have both contacted me and know that i am not a malicious person/poster and i hope that is taken into consideration. Thanks, Olly
I suggest that you may have to use normal Emails as it is difficult to adjust for one person. If they have hidden their email adresses I can ask them if they want their details released to you. Regards
Another point for us noobs, any chance of the sin bin being made available to READ but not necessarily REPLY to? It is (on occassion) linked to in the umpiring forums, and I'd rather be able to read it, even if you don't necessarily trust me enough (for another dozen(?) posts or so ) to have sufficient self-control, or even better: "a social conscience" including "some empathy and tolerance for other members" to contribute.
Ahh, what's a few posts between friends - maybe go and indulge in some of the games, or have a chat in hockey chit chat, or on the bench, and before you know it... 25 posts. Nice try jtsoldier, but no cigar
Worth a shot. But even so - two days later I am still a couple of posts short. Unfortunately when there is a fairly active forum, no amount of refreshing will get you the opportunity to be the first to respond to that dream topic for which you actually know the answer.
have a look in the games threads if you want to increase your post count or just post some welcomes to new players who introduce themselves
Help!!! I am trying to reply to someone who replied to my advert to sell my goalie kit but I cannot reply to their message or even view their profile! Can one of the administrators change the restrictions on my account please? Thanks
They could, but if you post 25 times you will be able to access the PM functions. Go to spot the ball/ one of the word games and get your post count up
